Located off a well-established nature reserve, the Denham residence is positioned on a deep and linear battle-axe site with a rear-facing gentle slope overlooking the luscious flora of the surrounding reserve.
Our design approach for the interiors of this residence takes inspiration from two major factors, the commanding linear ‘axis’ of the site, and the materiality of natural timbers surrounding the local context. Working closely with the broader design team, the use of maple wood was selected in order to provide a warm and homely feel that coincides with the nature reserve, as well as compliment the linear approach to the overall built form.
Providing a simplified and uniformed look, the strong use of maple wood possesses largely straight grains, with instances of curved and rippled variations adding a specific character to the wood species. These characteristics proved critical in the selection and application of timber throughout the major founding elements, and subsequent joinery features.
