This boutique apartment, located in the heart of Bondi Junction, is nested within a building complex with heritage ties to Sydney’s very first casino building. Over the course of Sydney’s development expansion, the original hotel rooms belonging to the casino we’re carefully strata subdivided to create a small number of unique apartment units, and offered to the market. After approaching Aleksandar Gordan and enquiring about our design services, we worked closely with the owners to create a detailed brief of their design intent.
The overarching design intent for this internal renovation was to purposefully create a connection between ‘old’ and ‘new’, paying respect to the buildings heritage in a thoughtful and modern way. The use of chevron flooring and rusted brick cladding to walls is cleverly supported by the use of exposed steel universal beams, that provide for much-needed storage and shelving space to an already intimate footprint. The steel UB’s have been carefully anodised and integrated with lighting to elevate the industrial and heritage aspects of the building. Further to this, the introduction of cast-iron doors and windows have been selected to enhance the design brief, whilst providing practical planning solutions internally, through the proposal of the glass divider between the bed area, living space and powder room.
